Sustainability

As fifth-generation guardians of the land, we take a long-term view — balancing productive farming with environmental care, biodiversity, and community connection.

Whitimanuka Retreat embodies our environmental values. The retreat is powered by solar energy, we use environmentally friendly cleaning and bathroom products, and the wastewater system includes native plantings for nutrient absorption — a closed-loop approach that protects the land and waterways.

On farm, our sustainable practices include deferred grazing, mixed-species planting, efficient water use, and precise nutrient management to protect and enrich soil health. We’ve invested in riparian planting, created a six-hectare wetland, and preserved 18 hectares of QEII-protected bush — ensuring ecosystems thrive alongside our farming operation.

Sustainability is also about people. Through our strong on-farm team, community initiatives like the Ponatahi Eco Zone, and industry-wide knowledge sharing, we’re committed to leaving the land, our business, and our community stronger for future generations.

In 2025, we were honoured to be named the Greater Wellington Ballance Farm Environment Award Winners. Read more →
